Modalert Historical Information

Modalert is a generic version of a drug called modafinil that was initially developed by a French pharmaceutical company and marketed under the Provigil brand. It is manufactured and sold by Sun Pharma, an Indian pharmaceutical company, and is available in 100 and 200 mg doses.  Modafinil is a drug that was developed to treat certain types of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and shift work disorder but is also used to enhance cognitive performance, attention span, and concentration.

It came about as a result of the invention of a number of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds. One of these was Adrafinil, which Modafinil is developed from as it is Adrafinil’s primary metabolite. Interestingly enough, adrafinil works similarly to modafinil but its use isn’t as widespread though it is available without a prescription, unlike Modafinil.

Since 1994, Modafinil has been sold in France under the Modiodal brand, and since 1998, it has been sold as Provigil in the United States by Cephalon Inc. The latter initially leased the rights for this drug from Lafon but then bought the company. It should be noted that generic versions of this drug were only made available starting in 2012 in the United States, though other countries have had them for quite a while longer.

The main issue in the US was that Cephalon did everything it could to delay the expiration date of the patent, including filing for a patent after the initial one expired for modafinil as particles of a defined size. Everything they did was to attempt to delay the sale of generic brands on the US market because Provigil doesn’t come cheap and their profits would have suffered immeasurably.

It should be noted that Indian companies are not required to adhere to patents filed before 1995, so generic forms of this drug were being developed and sold long before 2012, simply not on US territory.

A Quick Look at the Benefits of Modalert

Since Modalert’s active ingredient is Modafinil, this drug has the same effects as Provigil. In other words, it promotes alertness, improves concentration and enhances attention spans. Its main effect, though, is as a wakefulness agent, which is why it is widely used to treat narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. The latter are the only treatments the FDA has approved this drug for, though the policy does state that doctors may prescribe it for other purposes as well. They might be subject to more intense scrutiny but many physicians still prescribe Modafinil to treat other conditions.

For example, many physicians choose to prescribe it for the treatment of ADHD because it has fewer side effects than Adderall or Ritalin, and is also less addictive.

Why Do So Many People Prefer Modalert?

Many people choose Modalert over other brands of Modafinil such as Modvigil or Waklert because of the cost. The quality is comparable to Provigil, yet it’s literally a fraction of the cost. In fact, it can sometimes cost as little as a tenth of the price of Provigil, which is a significant difference.

Whether you want to take this drug to treat narcolepsy or you want it for its cognitive performance enhancement attributes, the difference in price will have a massive impact, especially if you will be taking it regularly.

Note that Modafinil is classed as a controlled substance in the US. For this reason, before you order Modalert, make sure to do your research in terms of the source so you don’t have any unpleasant surprises.  A reliable international vendor of Modalert can be found here.

Modalert vs Provigil

It should be noted that some people claim to experience somewhat different effects from Modalert compared to Provigil. Thus, some people have found the effects to be more subtle, while others have experienced the exact opposite, with intense bouts of alertness and significantly higher reaction times.

There have been claims that the difference in effects could be caused by the fact that Modalert is a slow-release drug whereas Provigil is not, though there is no evidence to suggest the former has been purposely formulated thusly and all evidence is anecdotal as best. The large number of people claiming not to feel any difference between the effects of the two drugs also seems to refute the belief that the two medications are formulated differently.

One issue might be that the people who experienced different reactions could have sourced their tablets from non-reputable suppliers and ended up with fake versions of the drug. This is more likely for the people didn’t feel any effects whatsoever or they were extremely subtle. Another explanation could be a change in dosage with the switch to the new brand. If a lower or higher dosage was taken, it could account for the differences.

Bottom Line

Modalert is a cost-effective yet completely viable alternative to Provigil. You can enjoy all the alertness, wakefulness and cognitive performance enhancement benefits of Modafinil at a fraction of the cost of other brands, such as Provigil.
