Huperzine A Dosage Advice

Huperzine A is a nootropic compound that inhibits the acetylcholinesterase enzyme from breaking down the acetylcholine neurotransmitter, thereby elevating its levels in the body. It is a completely natural substance extracted from Chinese club moss and its effects are similar to those of a number of medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Huperzine A, however, is much more cost-effective. Taking too much of this compound, however, has been associated with the occurrence of various mild side effects, which is why knowing the right Huperzine A dosage is so important.

Is Huperzine A Effective?

Quite a few clinical trials have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of Huperzine A. One such trial found that teenagers supplementing with this compound exhibited major memory function improvement. The study in question was conducted with healthy teenagers who did not suffer from any form of mental impairment, which only makes the results that much more impressive.

Another clinical trial was conducted with students from a Chinese middle school who were experiencing memory issues. Once again, memory function improved significantly once supplementation with Huperzine A began.

Other studies show that patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other degenerative mental conditions experience better thinking abilities and memory improvements within two months of starting supplementation with Huperzine A. (source)

There is also a belief that this compound might be able to help reduce the risk of other mental degenerative conditions such as senile dementia.  Further studies need to be done to determine if the findings are conclusive.  For now, this drug does seem to be effective.

Huperzine A Dosage: How Much Should You Take?

While Huperzine A has a wide range of benefits, taking too much of this supplement has been associated with some side effects, including: sweating, muscle twitching, higher levels of saliva, restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite and slurred speech. Though temporary, these side effects can still be unpleasant, which is why it’s important to take the right dose of the drug.

It’s important to note that Huperzine A can be taken either as an injection or orally. Generally speaking, when using this compound as a supplement in a healthy individual, oral administration is the most common form of delivery via a capsule. Injections tend to be used mainly with patients suffering from severe medical problems, such as for people suffering from myasthenia gravis disease.

When Huperzine A is taken via a capsule, the dose ranges from 50 to 200 mg and are taken twice per day. This is the most frequent dosage prescribed to people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease as well as for people suffering from diminished mental reactions caused by conditions such as multi-infarct dementia.

People suffering from pre-senile dementia are prescribed 60 mg of Huperzine A per day, spread out over two administrations. The recommended dosage for teenagers is 200 mg spread out over two administrations.

When used as a nootropic compound, most people experience the most benefits with few to no side effects when taking between 100 to 200 mg per administration, but it is advised you not exceed 400 mg per day as anything over that has been associated with an increase in the risk of side effects occurring.

Bottom Line

Huperzine A is a powerful nootropic compound that offers great benefits to memory function and overall cognitive performance. However, it is important to stick to the recommended Huperzine A dosage as too much can cause mild side effects.
